THERE has been lots of talk lately about a perceived need for Keighley and/or Ilkley to split from Bradford district.

Those seeking independence have claimed spending in Bradford city centre takes money away from the leafy outer areas of the district.

But where do you draw the line with this ridiculous argument?

It’s an every-man-for-himself mentality, which would be wrong and unworkable if it were taken to its logical conclusion.

Were Ilkley and Keighley to go their own way, how long before Ilkley would turn its back on Keighley? How long before the wealthiest people in Ilkley turned away from their neighbours, who live in smaller houses in the next street?

Personally, I’m proud of where I live and I wouldn’t want to live in an area with such a dog-eat-dog mentality.

I take pride in looking out for my neighbours – it’s what makes a country civilised. Don’t let people chip away at that.

Let’s not be small-minded or turn in on ourselves, and let’s resist this kind of division.
