REGARDING Christopher Ackroyd’s letter – Phone box paint plea (Keighley News, May 18) – about the poor state of the telephone box at the bottom of Main Street in Haworth, I have this to add.
Surprisingly, this telephone box is a Grade II listed building and clearly is not being maintained as one.
Inside it, there is a telephone with cash box, but the slot for cash is blocked off.
There are instructions on how to use a bank card to make calls, but there is no card reader.
So, the only way to make a call is to request reversed charges, for which the minimum charge is £3.50!
I presume 999 would work for free, but did not see it as my duty to try it.
I just wonder if there is any recent history of anyone actually using this telephone. But, being a Grade II listed building, it must remain in situ, no matter what!
