IT would be much appreciated if very firm assurances will be made to those of us who are unfortunate enough to live in what appears to be a direct path beneath the proposed cemetery – Work could resume at new cemetery site (Keighley News, June 8) – and that the natural spring water which flows downhill to Braithwaite Road will not in any way be contaminated by the disintegration of coffins and corpses etc.

My husband and I purchased a property on Braithwaite Road in 1965 and I still live in the same property.

It has always been known that the land behind the house between Braithwaite Road and the farm is full of natural springs – not the bouncy kind, but the very wet kind.

In the ensuing 50-plus years we have experienced water flow in, around and under the house, flowing out of various places at the back of the property, down the steps and across the parking area.

It is obvious water will always flow down, never up.

At this present time (Saturday, June 10), after today’s heavy downpour, water is flowing out of garden walls and further down the garden facing Braithwaite Road, across my access steps and the parking area.

In recent years I have had an inspection carried out on the flow of water by David Oldcorn, senior land drainage officer with the department of regeneration and culture, Bradford Council.

Can I find out who bought the site. Are they local or some faceless group from some other part of the country? The councillors who voted six to one, who are they? Do they know this area, or are we just a place on a map that is not close to where they live?

In the Keighley News article it appears that the agent for the applicant, Michael Ainsworth, has said ‘they’ want to start when the weather is dry as later in the year “it would be a quagmire”. It will be, it always is and, if my 50 years’ experience is anything to go by, it always will be.
