I WAS fortunate enough to be able to attend the launch event of the Bradford Manufacturing Week, which will run from October 8 to 12, as reported on the business page of the Keighley News on May 31.

The week is designed to promote to schools work experience with engineering companies, and promote manufacturing as a real career option.

I was able to listen to – and later talk to – both the young people who attended the event. They were not only a credit to themselves but to their school, Bradford Grammar, and company, Advanced Actuators, from Silsden.

The district and Keighley in particular has a fantastic and diverse range of engineering and manufacturing companies and we all must do whatever we can to encourage our young people to seriously consider careers in industry, particularly as they are key to not only the district’s prosperity, but also that of our young people and the wider community.
