KEIGHLEY peace campaigners, calling for the UK Government to support the Treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons, gathered in Town Hall Square.
The speed today with which any nation state can become involved in military conflict with devastating consequences is an indictment on the way governments work.
The only hope in removing the threat of a nuclear war is worldwide nuclear disarmament.
The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, on the third anniversary of it being established, provides a legally binding framework for those who join it and the work continues to strengthen the basis of the treaty.
With the ratification of Sao Tome and Principe, there are now 70 countries committed to a world free of nuclear weapons.
It must be asked in the world of today why nine nations are able to hold the majority to ransom? The call must go out to our Government to first of all engage and listen, then work to join the UN Treaty for a nuclear weapons free world.
Campaigners hope to continue to lobby Bradford Council to support the campaign. It should be noted that Keighley Town Council, as a member of Mayors for Peace, has signed a pledge in support.
Sylvia Boyes, Keighley
