Respect for neighbours to Christmas lights - your views

Tolerance and respect for your neighbours

I’ve noticed that people from different cultures are having trouble living alongside of each other.

I’ve lived at my current address for well over 20 years.

Over the last few years a lot of Asian people have moved into the district. As I meet them I treat them, both young and old, with complete respect — show respect and you will get respect.

I am now 65 and every time I am poorly my neighbours come around and help me. Recently on my birthday, I was invited around to my neighbour’s house, showered with presents and they gave me a marvellous party.

I have the best neighbours in the world and I wouldn’t swap them for anyone, so come on you people of Keighley, with a little tolerance and a lot of respect, you can have neighbours like mine — the best.

Unsung sporting heroes

On TV we will once again see the annual “Sports Personality of the Year” awards.

The usual over-hyped athletes, gymnasts, footballers, racing drivers and boxers will be contesting for the trophy.

The young girl featured in your paper on November 26, Liane Llewellyn, from Denholme, her achievements far exceed anything that the so called celebrities have done.

To swim the English Channel both ways without a rest, a 45 mile round trip (at least) taking 27hr 35min in treacherous conditions, the mind boggles.

Liane’s swim also raised £3,500 for charities.

Let us recognise and give these prestigious awards to real unsung heroes of sport, not just celebrities.

Well done Liane, you have my vote.

Mr R Asquith,

Providence Lane, Oakworth.

Editor’s note: Do you know an unsung hero of sport who you would like to praise?

If so please email a note to malcolm.hoddy@keighleynews.co.uk

Town Mayor's Christmas greetings

May I, through your letter page, send my sincere good wishes to the people of Keighley in this season of goodwill.

During the last seven months as mayor I have had the great pleasure of meeting many good people of Keighley and seeing the very different projects and activities that are happening. Most especially it has been a pleasure to meet so many of our young people.

The pupils of Our Lady of Victories Primary had an anti- bullying day and collected £157.60 for the mayor's charities. Last week I visited Oakbank School where the year seven students had organised a collection of food for the Salvation Army's Christmas appeal, what super youngsters we have in Keighley!

The generosity of the people of the town to our charity appeal is overwhelming. Next week the Spice House, along with some local businesses, is hosting a charity supper for children with disabilities.

At this time of year we are more aware of those who have little and I thank you for the ways in which you have responded to the calls for help.

I urge you to give generously over the Christmas season; give of your time, your love and yourselves and Christmas will bring joy and blessings for all.

A very happy Christmas and a bright and hopeful 2010.

Cllr Margaret Ward

Town Mayor

What a terrific lights show in villages

I would like to say a massive thank you publicly to the landlord of the Cross Roads Inn and parish councillor Mark Pullen for their part in giving Cross Roads and Lees a terrific Christmas lights show this year!

It is many years since Cross Roads had lights anywhere and it looks fantastic Then we come to the tree.

I was part of the volunteer team from the Village Association which planned and organised the paved seating area in a corner of the Almshouses' garden. In those days we had a cut tree kindly donated by Roy Clarke and with the help of Bradford Council got the lights working in time for Carols Around the Tree. In the early years the hole left in the paving for the tree had been concreted up so we were left with a tree and nowhere to put it!

A few frantic phone calls later to Jacob’s Well, in Bradford, saw the flying squad out to put all to rights! Along with other village friends we arranged for a very small fir tree to be planted .

However, it was always an uphill battle between misguided individuals and the weather to keep the bulbs on the wire and the lights lit. In latter years we have had no village illumination but village children decorated the tree at the “carols” half-hour and that always held a special, simple charm.

That was then — and now? That little fir tree which only came up to my elbow dominates the roadside.

Taking advantage of working class

While I may agree somewhat with Barry Thorne, he misses the point made by David Samuels that we should be worried by our inadequate democracy; the present government in particular.

John Ashton’s letter being a prime example for the following reasons. Jane Thomas may or may not be the perfect candidate for Labour but the method of her selection highlights I feel David Samuels free thinking approach.

She was not chosen by Labour voters in Keighley as their candidate but by a small clique of members who had imposed on them an all women candidate list. Democracy is about people making decisions in their own areas and not being coerced by executive power groups. The people of Keighley deserve a representative who lives, works and understands the issues we have to tackle here.

Local choice, local power, local representation are required to stop careerist politicians taking advantage of working class men and women, which new labour has done, and hence David Samuels’s insight into why the far right are winning and making much progress among labour’s natural supporters.

I'm waiting for Ann Cryer's report where she claimed £18 on her expenses amongst other things for a toilet brush. 45p in Asda they are.
Not very bright our MP's, Gordon Brown says he will clean up politics amongst his own party, so what does madam Cryer do, she "trots" off to buy a gold plated toilet brush. Doh, he didn't mean that type of clean Ann.
On a serious note my opinion is that these sad individuals are taking any last grab they can during their supermarket sweep style attitude whereby they will take every single thing they can until the sun don't shine anymore. People I speak to say it's theft, simple as that, but it won't stop until someone is prosecuted, you know like you or I would be if we committed this kind of dishonesty.
Well Ann you will be remembered as the MP who truly flushed her career down the pot in style.

May I respectfully suggest to the veteran socialist Mr Barry Thorne, now seemingly a qualified psychiatrist, his suggestion I’m raving mad for stating that in my view the Labour Party is not now fit for purpose is a opinion shared by many others in this country!

The reality of today’s politics and especially Labour’s governance of the past twelve years is truth has come home to roost. Never in the history of this country has so much debt been amassed by any Government. One hundred and fifty trillion pounds of debt! Seemingly for the labour Party a small item to conveniently forget. One hundred and fifty trillion pounds of debt!

Mr Thorne and Mr Ashton of Oxenhope suggest there is nobody within the Keighley and Ilkey region with the quality and vibrancy to compete with other mainstream party candidates. What a sad and defeatist admission!

When Mr Thorne makes mention of his disabled son, in this he really has my understanding. As a parent of a disabled person, who has since died, I personally realise the financial difficulty being disabled in today’s world. Please note however, money illegally claimed by well off Members of Parliament using subterfuge on housing claims and other activities etc, could have helped my son and many others in similar torment! Mr Thorne has not made mention of such thievery from the political elite yet he suggests I‘m the one on a rant! Really?

It was the two tame postings that we put against the story. If someone has added a bitter posting then take that one off by all means, but to close the whole article to debate or question is just nonsense and gives the impression that people are hiding things from the wider public.

Whilst the Keighley News could never be regarded as being even a reasonable minor newspaper regarding its coverage of any major local topic that needs debate or issues that need to be addressed, should come as no surprise to anyone who has an opinion

Need a tradesman, want to know small town gossip, read the rag, want to know about and be able to debate a serious issue, forget the pages or website of the Keighley News.

The policies of local papers like the Keighley News are made at head office, in this case, Newsquest media group, or the Gannet company, Americas largest newspaper publishers, run for profit of couse, and is a controlled media outlet, that means that the manager of this local paper is not really a coward, he has rules and policies to guide him, which in turn means that you and I will never be able, (through these pages) to discuss or debate serious isues.

No good upsetting the natives by telling the truth or allowing sensible debate on issues of either National or even local importance, obvious by the selective stories that allow weak comment or detraction from weak stories into the bullying or insult aimed at fellow posters, as in the intercept comment that "Kevin" has somehow created a new conspiracy theory, how?, or the assumption that "Kevin" is somehow linked to the dreaded, wash my mouth out BNP. Enthrall us with your acumen intercept, or debate with decency and Common sense.

On the contrary Mark Pullen, I have on many occasions read with interest comments made on this website by yourself and others regarding issues that have been of great concern to many, the fact that I have not joined in is that issues discussed have been of little or no interest to me, but I find comments made with clarity, passion, courage and intelligence are always worth reading, it is the descent into flippancy, bullying, and second rate replies that gall me simply because they act as a barrier to honest statements, comments or debate.

The fact that local newspapers like the Keighley News and the Telegragh and Argus only allow freedom of speech to be exercised in a controlled way, on selective stories, proves they have no interest in the opinions of their readership, and have no faith in their own ability to control properly the reactions of that readership to an issue of genuine concern, sad really.

From comments I have read by Samuels, intercept, Mckay, yourself and many others whose names and pseudonyms escape me, including our "Kevin", you and they have an opinion, and if we vilify an individual for having that opinion, dialogue ends, if we refuse to debate, the conclusion of debates by others could overtake the reasonable man.

You dont have to be an intellectual to have an opinion, common sense will do nicely.

I don't deny it Kevin - it's the thought of the CEO of Gannett, publisher of over 1000 newspapers around the world and owner of 23 TV stations in the US, might be the slightest bit interested in what appears in the Keighley News I find amusing. I'd be very suprised if there are many people at Gannett HQ that have even heard of the Keighley News!

vinny, oxenhope says...

LGM, I cannot understand your logic, with respect, how can facts be interpreted as paranoia, how an employee of Newsquest can possibly be described as a puppet simply by following orders and doing his job to his employers specifications, that you could assume by your reference that for some reason the FBI may be involved etc, and why would you need to wear a tin- foil hat.

Your strange reaction to my comment will not alter the fact that Newsquest media/Gannet, with over 300 newspaper outlets in the UK alone are in complete control and as a SUCCESSFUL company, will account for every penny, every word, even how every word is written in each and every one of its newspapers.

To allow comments on issues as varied as racial assault (racism cuts both ways), the acts of paedophiles, grug dealing and dealers, Asian grooming of vulnerable white girls as young as eleven, assaults, political statements, gang culture, are all stories written and are major issues that need addressing, but are selectively left without any course of redress.

LGM, your opinion is important, without this you are nothing, your anger over many of the most appalling news stories will not be quenched, your hatred could increase, stereotypes will be made, all for the sake of not being allowed an opinion, or by not using your right of opinion as you see it, on these most appalling of news stories.

LGM common sense was destroyed by political correctness, do you have the courage to fight for the return of common sense, or are you happy to be flippant and sit on the fence.

If you want a say in who your chosen party puts forward as a candidate, put your money where your mouth is and join!

Part of the reason politics in this country is in a mess is that "ordinary" people don't take a stand for what they believe in and just sit carping on the sidelines.

Fair comment,
Truth, freedom of speech, love and support of country, the family, a police force that can protect me, my family and the rest of us, less government interference in our affairs, an education system that works, an NHS that is not constantly in the red, a fair pay for a fair days work, an intolerance to outside influence by foreign powers in matters of our governance, an end to the incompetence from career politicians in it for the money.

These are just a few of the real things I would like to see, sadly, there is no political party in Westminster with the ability to give us these things.

You say that "ordinary" people do not make a stand for what they believe in, I will give you just a couple of instances from many where "ordinary" people have done just that, where their beliefs and stand has been thrown back in their faces, backed up with a police baton, September 2002, 400.000 "ordinary" people brought a rural protest to London, police batons were used, our government ignored them, February 2003, a protest against the illegal war in Iraq, 750.000 "ordinary" people took part in a demonstration in London, the organisers put the true figure at 2 million, our government ignored them.

Given that you could not get a sheet of toilet paper between any of the main political parties, I ask of you your advice, (sincerely), how can I, as an "ordinary" person, vote for a party or candidate who will not insult my intelligence, steal from me, lie to me, decieve me, make a laughing stock of my country in front of the World, start illegal wars, and cause the deaths of my own country men and women and countless thousands of "ordinary" citizens in Iraq and Afghanistan, when such a party or politician does not yet exist.

As an "ordinary" person, I will now only vote for a truly independant politician who would share the majority of my own views with no party line to follow, if and when one turns up!.

Vinny, I think you will find that some political party's, police forces and other establishments you thought were here for the people are not, look at "tpuc.org" All more or less registered as businesses operating for profit. We have sadly hit very troubled times, our police forces unable to operate effectively if they do not achieve financial targets through fixed penalty notices etc. A very very sad day indeed, all in the name of greed. Wonder if I should query why I pay West Yorkshire Police in amongst my council tax premium if they are business registered?

The story one learns from history is nothing in this world ever basically changes.
The bully boys from time immemorial are still with us.
The religious/political class still wish to reign over all.
The murderers, violence and sexual abominations are still within the entire human race.
The mentally and physically weak are prayed upon and marginalised.
The world always suffers more war than peace.
The hatred, because of envy, pomp and ceremony is to die for.
The personal sacrifice of mankind is still the exception.
The genocide is the rule for individual ambition.
The low self esteem creates abhorrence of others.
The physical poverty and mental starvation of others is the dogma of those with power.
The anger is a police state which has no freedom of expression.
The above and much more are totally insignificant by our inability to say sorry!
