Lulu, Cher, Madonna, Beyonce... and now Harper.

Keighley’s pop darling Amy Harper is reaching for solo stardom with a single name. Following the demise of her girl group Bon Bonz, the 21-year-old has jettisoned her first name.

Under the moniker Harper, she has released a single entitled The Boss and plans to record her first solo album.

The Keighley News last week told how Amy was touring Yorkshire schools giving anti-drugs presentations and singing.

Amy has been a performer from an early age, and as a teenager was a cheerleader with Keighley Cougars.

She started her professional career in a theme park showgroup at 17 – while still at performing arts college – then performed in Girls Aloud and Rihanna tribute acts.

Four years ago she teamed up with fellow solo singers Catherine Cooper and Kay Molyneaux to form Bon Bonz.

The trio spent the summer of 2012 performing at Gay Pride festivals alongside stars such as Alexandra Burke, and promoted second album Shush by performing at Christmas lights switch-ons across Lancashire.

Amy said Bon Bonz split last September for various reasons – not least the pregnancy of one member.

She said: “We didn’t fall out, it was just unforeseen circumstances. We were all gutted – we wanted to carry on.

“Before the Bon Bonz I was a clubland singer and a tribute act, now I want to be known as a solo artist in my own right.

“It’s all taken a natural course. I’m going to work on original material, putting together an EP and an album.”

Amy said the Yorkshire schools tour, carried out with Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), will hopefully continue through the Spring and be expanded to the entire country.

Meanwhile, she will be promoting The Boss – which she describes as gimmicky commercial pop – with video shoots, photo shoots and radio appearances.
