A new show at the Square Chapel in Halifax will recreate the golden moments of comedian Tony Hancock.

The Best Of Tony Hancock recalls a time when TV show Hancock’s Half Hour was one of the most popular BBC comedy programmes.

It was written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, who would later pen Steptoe And Son, and migrated successfully from radio to television.

Almost overnight Tony Hancock and his sidekick Sid James – before his Carry On film days – became two of the most recognisable entertainers of their generation.

In the shows, Tony Hancock was the epitome of self-delusion. Eternally convinced he was smarter than everyone else, he would repeatedly suffer mishap after mishap to hilarious effect.

Some of the best-loved portrayals came in episodes The Blood Donor, The Radio Ham, The Cold, The East Cheam Repertory Company and The Cruise.

In due course, fame and success took its strain on Tony, and at the time of the overdose that killed him, he was a shadow of his former self.

Iain Barton, together with a supporting cast, recreates some of the best Galton and Simpson sketches of Hancock’s career in a 90-minute show.

The Best Of Tony Hancock is on February 22. Call (01422) 349422 or visit squarechapel.co.uk for details.
