Rehearsals are in full swing for Yeadon Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society’s production of Me And My Girl... but a vital costume is missing.

Jayne King, from the society, said: “Usually, at this point in preparation, it can get quite fraught, but the cast and crew are making fantastic progress – the props, though, are proving challenging. Having already had to source a tiger-skin rug, a rapier and a double-barrelled shotgun, the team is now looking for a suit of armour! It is crucial to the plot, so we’ve got to find it.”

The society faced a further headache when it lost its leading man eight weeks before opening night.

Choreographer, Ted Oxley, said: “We were well into rehearsals when, due to job commitments, our leading man had to withdraw from the show.

“The role is huge – there’s a mammoth amount of singing and dancing, but we have found a superb replacement in Rob Hastings. He’s a brilliant actor.”

Rob began rehearsals while wife, Samantha, was expecting their second baby. When he played the same role before, at Harrogate Theatre, Samantha was about to give birth to their first child. “It’s a case of deja-vu,” jokes Rob. “My wife and son, Jacob, put up with all my rehearsals and singing in the bath.”

The popular musical, which features the songs Leaning On A Lamp-post and Lambeth Walk, was revived in the West End in 1985 in a production starring Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson. Yeadon Amateurs’ production of Me And My Girl runs at Yeadon Town Hall from March 11 to 15. Call 07570 610989 for further information.
