Keighley’s Mechanics Institute plays a leading role in the latest novel written by former town resident, John Waddington-Feather, above.
He has named his crime story – The Dance-Hall Mystery – after the renowned building in North Street, which burned down in 1962.
Many older couples in Keighley still have affection for the building because it is where they met while attending dance events in the 1950s.
The Mechanics also housed John’s old school – Keighley Boys’ Grammar – before it became the site for Keighley College.
In John’s book, the Mechanics is in his fictional version of Keighley – called Keighworth – the hometown of his hero, Blake Hartley.
The priest-detective also travels to Peru and Spain during the story as he tracks down a gang of international cocaine traffickers.
The Dance-Hall Mystery is available for the Kindle E-reader and costs 77p on Amazon, home to several of John’s previous novels.
