Advertised as a fast-moving, slickly choreographed theatrical treat, the production at St George’s Hall in Bradford was certainly that.

Two powerful singing dancers and six supporting dancers paid tribute to the iconic revelations of the 60s.

But mistake not, this show wasn’t dirty. We’re talking about a sensation 50 years ago – with songs from the famous 1980s film – where 17-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman was about to learn some major lessons in life as well as a thing or two about dancing.

During Baby Houseman’s holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with older sister and parents, other activity was rather more to the fore.

The first half of A Night Of Dirty Dancing stuck principally to rhythm, movement, lighting and puffs of smoke. After the interval, variety intervened with melodious relief and gymnastic skill.

The final line-up benefited from audience participation – a triumph, no less. Nobody climbed mountains, just climbed a few steps to dance on stage to the delight and admiration of the assembled artists.

A Night Of Dirty Dancing will be at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax on November 1. Visit calderdale.gov.uk/victoria or call 01422 351158 to book tickets.
