Evidence for a flourishing local folk scene peppers the pages of Yorkshire folk music magazine Tykes’ News.

The latest issue highlights a new folk club in Lothersdale as well as the upcoming season at an established Stanbury club.

And as usual there is news of performers at the renowned Baccapipes Folk Club in Keighley, including Billy Mitchell, Jeff Warner and Silsden singer Janet Russell.

Readers can also find what well-known local artists including the Demon Barbers, Steve Tilston, Jim Woodland and are up to.

Keighley-based Tykes’ News, which is produced by local folk fans, is published quarterly and features 64 pages of news, reviews, interviews and listings.

Lothersdale Live, which has been set up by Eddie Cullen, will be based in the village hall and begins on June 7 with Vin Garbutt.

Coming up will be leading folk artists including Jez Lowe (October 25), Martin Carthy and the Wilson Family.

Folk nights continue at the Wuthering Heights, Stanbury, but have now been moved to the last Sunday of every month from 4pm to 7pm.

Haworth-based folk band the Demon Barbers will be on the road soon with their XL show which incorporates many elements of their acclaimed theatre show The Lock-In.

Demon Barbers XL, which combines music with traditional English and modern hip-hop dancing, is at the Shepley Spring Festival on May 16-18.

Tykes’ News also highlights performers at the Ryburn 3-Step Folk Club, Sowerby Bridge, which include Silsden’s Jim Woodland on May 28.

It also reveals that former Oakworth man Steve Tilston, a renowned singer-songwriter, is continuing his regular Trades Routes residency in Hebden Bridge.
