Shrek The Musical – Leeds Grand

EVERYTHING’s still green at the Grand Theatre as Wicked makes way for another hit musical.

Wicked was a dramatic, disturbing, stirring, heart-rending epic destined for classic status.

Shrek, even though its leading character shares a similar shade of emerald to Wicked’s Elpheba, is a different beast indeed. It’s simply fun.

It’s a faithful adaptation of the animated movie about a flatulent ogre who unexpectedly finds love, with songs.

Shrek protests after the evil, bigoted Lord Farquaad dumps every fairytale creature in the swamp he calls home.

In return for his land back Shrek agrees to rescue a princess from a-infested castle and bring her back to marry the Lord.

Along the way he falls in love with the princess, befriends a wise-cracking donkey and becomes the poster boy for rebellious fairy folk.

It’s a fast and irreverent comedy in the vein of Spamalot, with tuneful and witty songs among the best from any recent musical, perfect for the whole family.

Shrek won’t last as long as Wicked, or Les Miserables, or Cats, but it will certainly give a lot of people a lot of enjoyment while it does last.
