A HAWORTH sculptor has been in demand to help create community-inspired artwork.

Craig Dyson has been working with a pair of Bradford neighbourhoods to put together a series of inspirational images and messages.

The commission came after Craig’s success creating a giant globe out of 2ps to celebrate the Tour de France going through his home village.

In Craig’s latest project, on the Tong Street corridor, one of the busiest main routes into Bradford, travellers will be greeted by the sight of famous people.

These include One Direction singer, Zayn Malik, a former Tong High school pupil, and Bradford-born artist David Hockney whose faces have been immortalised, alongside local community heroes on fencing around Knowles Park.

"For the Community by the Community" and "Time is Precious Use it Wisely" are among the positive anecdotes also featured in the artwork which is a collaboration between members of the local community, including pupils from Carrwood Primary in Holme Wood and Tong High School, whose portraits also appear on the installation.

The art was specially commissioned as part of a regeneration project for Holme Wood and Tong.

Tracy Uren, Bradford Council's housing development officer, explained that the project began in January when members of the community were asked for ideas on how to regenerate the area around the park.

"Because lots of people have been involved with it, it will give them ownership," she said. "Hopefully they will look after it as well because it is their fence, they have made and designed it and they chose the artist."

Craig, who created the artwork based on ideas put forward by local residents, said: "It has probably been one of the most hands-on community involvement projects I have done.

"What people underestimate is the sense of community, it is incredibly strong. People help people."

Pupils who were involved in the project from the schools also had the opportunity to see Craig at work in his studio in Haworth. A film documenting the project is set to be shown at the official unveiling in Knowles Park on September 11.

Craig achieved local fame earlier this summer as he and several months building a sphere out of coin globe Tour de France sculpture will be unveiled on Saturday in Haworth Park.
