TWO WORLD-class dance productions will take audiences from a Brazilian carnival to a modern fairytale world at Bradford Alhambra.

Grupo Corpo and Matthew Bourne are visiting the Bradford theatre exclusively and will not be performing their shows at any other venues In Yorkshire.

Brazil’s internationally acclaimed dance company Grupo Corpo will visit the Alhambra on October 24 and 25.

With a history stretching back nearly 40 years, Grupo Corpo’s 22 dancers combine the precision of classical ballet with the sensuality and passion of Latin dance rhythms.

Grupo Corpo translates as Group Body, reflecting the movement style of the dancers, who co-ordinate to fill the stage with unmatched energy and excitement.

Artistic director Rodrigo Pederneiras has taken inspiration from life in rural Brazil, encouraging his dancers to sweep across the stage, moving rhythmically from group to solo and back again.

A spokesman said: “There are moments of utter peace and stillness and others of raucous Brazilian carnival.

“In another piece, the choreography takes its inspiration from a Portuguese song cycle and focuses on a group of women who lament the departure of their lovers.

“Dressed in intricately patterned and colourful bodysuits, the dancers move as waves; the ebb and flow of their bodies mimicking the calm and fury of the sea.”

Edward Scissorhands, devised, directed and choreographed by acclaimed dance master Matthew Bourne, will return to the Alhambra from February 24 to 28 next year.

The ballet is based on the well-known Tim Burton film and features “beautiful and unforgettable” music by Danny Elfman and Terry Davies.

It is a touching love story that tells the bittersweet tale of a boy created by a lonely inventor who dies leaving him alone and unfinished.

Left with only scissors for hands, Edward must find his place in a strange suburban world where the well-meaning community struggle to see past his appearance to the innocence and gentleness within.
