CHANTRY Dance Company is bringing The Happy Prince and two other original ballets to Halifax.

The performances on November 20 at the Square Chapel Arts Centre will commemorate the 160th anniversary of Oscar Wilde’s birth.

Wilde’s magical story of The Happy Prince has been adapted and choreographed by West End and Sadler’s Wells performers Paul Chantry and Rae Piper.

The Happy Prince tells the story of a prince who gives away all his wealth to the poor people of his kingdom with the help of a swallow.

In life, spending every day in his wonderful palace, the prince had no idea how his people suffered. It is only after he becomes a statue overlooking the city that he learns the truth.

Chantry Dance Company tells this poignant tale through modern ballet, music and puppetry.

As well as The Happy Prince, there are two other ballets in Chantry’s tour programme.

The first, All I Can Do Is Be Me, is set to Bob Dylan’s best-loved songs, including Tambourine Man and Blowin’ in the Wind. The second, Gershwin’s famous jazz concerto Rhapsody in Blue, is presented as a dynamic duet.

The programme is performed by an international cast, and is said to provide a great evening of family entertainment.

Chantry Dance Company has been proclaimed one of the UK’s freshest and most exciting modern ballet companies. It specialises in telling stories, both traditional and original, that are both entertaining and of the highest artistic quality.

Under the leadership of Paul Chantry and Rae Piper, the company has danced all over the UK to fantastic reception.
