KEIGHLEY-based folk music magazine Tykes’ News has published a packed winter edition.

The A5-magazine offers feature articles alongside the usual news, reviews and listings.

Folk fans can find out about upcoming performances by local artists including Roger Davies, Plumhall and Tom McConville.

There are reviews of live performances by Richard Thompson, the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc, and Gordon Tyrall, who is performing the first headline slot of 2015 at the Baccapipes Folk Club on January 9.

Martha Tilston, daughter of renowned singer-songwriter Steve Tilston, who lived in Keighley for many years, has her latest album The Sea reviewed.

Tykes’ reviewers also cast a critical eye on New Leaves From Ancient Roots, the latest album from Haworth multi-instrumentalist and singer Tim Moon.A special feature written by Tykes’ regular contributor Nigel Schofield celebrates Keighley woman Jenny Scott’s 40 years running the town’s Baccapipes Folk Club.

Jenny tells how she came to Keighley after running Hartlepool Folk Club in the 1960s, and outlines what makes the friendly Keighley club unique.

The magazine also highlights a quest by folk performers Pete Coe and Alice Jones to showcase the work of Five Finger Frank, who compiled the ground-breaking collection Traditional Tunes in 1891.

Since then Frank’s books have remained the ‘go-to’ source for folk musicians ranging from former Keighley woman Fay Hield to the legendary Watersons.

Pete and Alice’s project includes a stage show, workshops, seminars, a double-CD of songs, and a website.

Jim Saville chronicles his visits to folk clubs in the region while Joe Solo contributes his observations of the folk scene.

Topic Folk Club members in Bradford remember one of their most long-standing members, the late Mick Walker.

Tykes’ renowned FiloFolk as usual lists hundreds of performances and club nights across Yorkshire during December, January and February.
