BESSIE’S Blues is the name of a new ‘supergroup’ formed by local musicians.

The trio play songs by the female pioneers of the blues such as Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie and Ida Cox.

The threesome make their debut together on Sunday (March 15) during the latest Blues & Roots night at the Black Bull in Haworth.

Ben “Blue” Waters, organiser of the event, said: “This eagerly awaited performance promises to be a real treat from three well-established and highly-respected musicians.

“They are award-winning vocalist Shelia McFarlane from The Bonnie Mac Band, virtuoso guitarist Gerry Cooper, well-known for solo performances and his duo with Phil Snell, and respected bassist Pete Taylor, from The Diamond Dac Trio.”

Also on the bill is popular Keighley singer-songwriter Johnny B.

Ben said: “Johnny’s heartfelt emotional songs delivered in his unique gruff vocal style have been winning over audiences in the Yorkshire area for several years.

“He has helped many local musicians by organising gigs and charity events.”

Completing the line up is renowned folk singer songwriter Jon Harvison.

Ben said: “Jon has a rich, powerful voice, a tasty guitar technique and is a brilliant songwriter.

“However he doesn't merely sing his own songs, he is also a fine interpreter of traditional songs. Add to this a mildly wicked sense of humour and you have the recipe for a great evening entertainment.”

Ben will start the evening off with a short set of footstomping slide guitar blues.
