Sucker – Charli XCX

Imagine that Katy Perry had a London cousin but she kept the girl locked away for everyone’s safety.

That’s Charli X, a rougher-edged, streetwise, home-grown version of America’s pop sweetheart.

From her in-your-face attitude and upfront lyrics you can imagine Charli photobombing celebrities and getting thrown out of the top nightclubs.

Charli is a pop star but there’s a lot of rock chick in her sound too, reminding me of classic guitar-based pop acts like Blondie and the Bangles.

Charli first came to notice writing and singing on the hit singles I Love It with Icona Pop and Fancy with Iggy Azalea, then had her own hit with Boom Clap, and most recently duetted with Rita Ora on the single Doing It.

Now she’s released her own 14 track album.

The songs are very catchy when you play them but – and I checked this by listening a few times – they are surprisingly easy to forget afterwards.

But maybe that’s not the point – like an impromptu party with your mates that wrecks the house, it’s fun while it lasts.
