AUDIENCES will be taken on a nostalgia trip next month to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Second World War’s end.

Sutton’s Green Hut Theatre Company will present the heartwarming musical When The Lights Go On Again.

There will be a street party atmosphere in Sutton Village Hall with spam sandwiches, trestle tables and flags to wave.

And the audience will be able to sing along to a host of popular wartime songs as they watch the story of one family’s experiences on the Home Front.

Over the past few years When The Lights Go On Again, written by Roy Sault, has proved a hit across the country on every wartime commemoration.

Green Hut first presented the show five years ago, when the group was known as Sutton Amateurs, and it was so popular that they immediately booked it again for 2015.

The light-hearted and poignant show begins in 1939 and follows the Parker family through the next six years until VE Day.

There are scenes at a local dance, a school concert and a street party, as well as comic interludes with ARP wardens, in the cinema queue, with the ration books and across the garden wall.

But there are dramatic moments too, as the Parkers fear for the fates of their loved ones fighting on land, sea and air.

Green Hut spokesman Katrina Knights said: “We see the men of the village going off to fight the war and the effects this has on the girlfriends and mothers left behind.

“We have rationing and the temptations of under the counter goods, ARP men, school concerts and the community spirit associated with dances in the village hall.”

When The Lights Go On Again will be staged from April 23-25 including a Saturday matinee.
