Dreamboats And Miniskirts – Halifax Victoria Theatre

THE JUKEBOX shines just as brightly as it is switched back on for the sequel to hit stage musical Dreamboats And Petticoats.

And lovers of classic pop and rock ‘n’ roll will have another great skip-and-a-hop down memory lane with the occasional chuckle along the way.

The original show portrayed the romances of three young couples at St Mungo’s Youth Club, culminating in Laura and Bobby eventually finding fame in the pop charts.

We return to the youth club, as the 60s gets into full swing, to find all three couples facing challenges in their relationships.

The teenagers’ chances for happiness rely on the success of club band the Conquests as they chase a record deal.

The plot is just as forgettable as first time around, but the songs are as brilliantly unforgettable, pulled from a wide range of early to mid-60s styles.

There are around 40 songs and they’re staged with imagination, played with punch by the on-stage band, and sung excellently by the effervescent cast.

This isn’t a show that will win an award for originality, let alone Best Musical, but the script is good enough to make this more than just a 60s nostalgia concert, and the result is a hugely enjoyable night out.
