ALEXANDRA Burke has been singing on stage for most of her life, and has performed alongside the likes of Beyonce.

But taking on the role of Rachael Marron in hit musical The Bodyguard was, she says, a whole new challenge.

She said: “I didn’t realise what a discipline theatre work is. I’m quite a disciplined person anyway, but doing eight shows a week is tough going and you need to be fit and strong.”

Based on the 1992 movie starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, The Bodyguard is the story of former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard Frank Farmer who is hired to protect superstar singer Rachel from a dangerous mystery stalker.

Both Frank and Rachael expect to be in charge – what they don’t expect is to fall in love.

The romantic thriller features a lively score packed with Whitney classics including Queen Of The Night, So Emotional, One Moment In Time, Saving All My Love, Run To You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and one of the biggest-selling songs of all time, I Will Always Love You.

Alexandra said: “I was quite young when the film came out, but I love it and I’m a massive fan of Whitney Houston. It’s a real honour to be singing the songs.

“It’s a fabulous show, the audience reaction is amazing wherever we go. We’re a great team and have learned so much. It has definitely given me a taste for acting.”

Recently Alexandra returned the studio to record new album Renegade.

She said: “It’s a new direction for me, a bit more rebellious. I have creative control.

“It’s a good time to be a female singer right now. There are some very strong British solo singers out there and I’m proud to be part of that.”

Alexandra is giving the evening performances of The Bodyguard, and in matinees Rachel will be played by Zoe Birkett, who rose to fame as the highest-placing female contestant on ITV’s Pop Idol in 2002.

The Bodyguard runs from Tuesday to June 13. Visit bradford-theatres.co.uk or call 01274 432000 to book tickets
