RENOWNED York panto star Berwick Kaler will play an iconic role in the city’s revival of children’s classic The Railway Children.

He will appear as the Old Gentleman in a carriage pulled by a real steam locomotive during the play at the National Railway Museum.

The Pannier Tank locomotive featured in the original Railway Children movie when it was filmed on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in the 1970s.

The engine was recently restored by the museum, ready to bring the acclaimed production back to the city where it was premiered in 2008.

This time the museum has built a special 1,000-seat theatre, which includes a full-size railway station with platforms, footbridge and working track.

The engine will steam into the auditorium at key points during the story of three middle-class children who move to the countryside to live alongside a railway track.

Following its York debut Mike Kenny’s adaptation of The Railway Children went on to international success, including a production at Waterloo Station in London.

The Railway Children runs from July 31 to September 5. Visit yorktheatreroyal.co.uk or call 01904 623568 for further information and to book tickets.
