Calamity Jane - Leeds Grand

Whoever thought of casting Jodie Prenger as rooting' tootin' sharpshooter Calamity Jane was a genius.

Her usual stage persona, brash, bubbly and blusteringly Northern, is a prairie away from Doris Day.

But she's a perfect fit for the cowgirl, making the role her own and joyously forcing you to forget Doris's film portrayal.

Jodie is both the heart and the fizzing energy ball at the centre of this imaginative, hugely enjoyable revival of the popular musical.

Director Nikolai Foster's production takes place in an evocative two-storey Western saloon with its own curtained stage at the back.

Piano, barrels, wagon wheels and furnishings are used to create other scenes, while the entire cast play instruments to accompany the songs.

It's a concept that works remarkably well in telling the story of how tough-talking tomboy Calamity discovers her inner woman and finally realises who she's really in love with.

The revelation is forced on her by seeing another girl snare the man she yearns for - the girl she brought back to Deadwood to sing in the saloon.

Tuneful songs, lively performances and distinctive staging make this a memorable musical.
