THE ACTS playing the latest Blues & Roots Night in Haworth are varied but all three are top-quality.

This is the proclamation from organiser Ben Blue Waters as he brings Mulholland, Julian Socha and Kat Luxford to the Black Bull on Sunday. (July 19)

Mulholland are a duo from York, who offer a fresh take on alt-country/folk, fusing the ‘sounds of the city’ and the ‘spirits of the backwoods’.

Ben said: “Think Neil Young meets early Bob Dylan via Lucinda Williams, with their influence reaching back to the heyday of singer/songwriters in the 60s and 70s.

“Mulholland bring their own take on acoustic Americana with their close harmonies, self-penned rootsy country material and reinterpreted songs from the past.”

Mulholland came together in 2012 as a five-piece, but now play as a stripped-back duo consisting of Stan Smith on lead vocals, acoustic guitar, and harmonica, and Ann Dunford on keyboards, accordion, fiddle, and harmony/backing vocals.

At the end of 2014 the pair released their first album of original material, entitled Ghosts and Shadows, to widespread critical acclaim.

This was followed by a music video for the album song Come On Back, produced by The Trash Factory and shot over two days in York in locations including cellar bar Sotano, York Cemetery and alleyways around the city.

The video is described as a surreal portrayal of memories, music and drunken revelry.

In September 2015 Mulholland start recording their new album with a release planned for early 2016.

Support on Sunday comes from the “ever-popular guitar wizard” Julian Socha and spellbinding, ethereal songstress Kat Luxford.
