BINGLEY Gilbert and Sullivan Society said it had signed up a new, young and vibrant production team for its next show.

The long-established theatre group promises a likely production of G&S The Pirates Of Penzance set in the 1950s and featuring biker pirates.

A spokesman said: “Exciting ideas from producers Sarah Earl and Jo Hudson and musical director Danny Gamble have already got the ‘buzz’ going among the cast.

“Our membership here just grows and grows with many families involved, some with three generations!

“Our leading lady Kristina Hodgson has recently come to live in Riddlesden and we’re sure that local Keighley supporters will give her a very warm welcome.

“Not only are we attracting young singers and dancers, we also hope to attract record audiences with our new venture.

“Come and see this exciting modern take, although, for traditionalists the music and words won’t change, well hardly ever!”

Although rehearsals have already started, the group said it was not too late for people to join the chorus.

Bingley Gilbert and Sullivan Society was created in 1957 and was originally based at Bingley Congregational Church.

The first performance, The Mikado, took place in the church’s Sunday School where musical accompaniment was provided by two pianos.

The venue, ‘the Congs’, was described as characterful due to its subterranean dressing rooms, narrow wooden stairs to the stage, thunderous plumbing and pocket handkerchief stage.

The Pirates Of Penzance will run at Bingley Arts Centre from April 20 to 23. Visit ticketsource.co.uk/bingleyartscentre or call 01274 567983 to book tickets.
