BINGLEY Jazz Club will host a tribute to Benny Goodman’s guitarist Charlie Christian.

Local guitarist Darren Dutson-Bromley has brought together a quartet to perform the concert on Thursday, June 30.

Charlie Christian made a significant contribution to the jazz world as an electric guitarist.

He gained a wide reputation as part of the Benny Goodman Sextet and orchestra and was a key figure in the development of bebop and cool jazz.

Dutson-Bromley lectures in music in Bradford and teaches guitar at the Yorkshire Music School.

He will be joined in the quartet by clarinettist Alan Barnes – an international composer, arranger band leader and touring soloist – drummer David Lee and bass player Paul Baxter.

They will perform classics associated with Goodman to commemorate the centenary of Christian's birth in July.

The club, through its Facebook page, recently paid tribute to well-known local bandleader and trombone player Malcolm Webb following his recent death after a long period of ill health.

In 1964 Malcolm was instrumental in forming the first jazz band to have a regular residency in Bingley, every Tuesday night at the Old Kings Head.

In 1970 the band, Malcolm Webb’s Famous New Orleans Jazz Band, moved to the Brown Call for a legendary period of 20-plus years.

He was known for his stentorian rallying cry: “Come on, come all! For hot jazz, pop, jazz, hokum and hilarity!”

Malcolm finished his own playing career with a residency for the Famous New Orleans Jazz Band at the Rishworth Club in Crossflatts, still attracting many of the old faithful.

Malcolm retired through ill health about 10 years ago.

The club said: “Malcolm passion for early jazz knew no bounds. He had a collection of 78 rpm records and wax cylinders that was recognised nationwide.

“Underlying his vast knowledge lay a simple and profound love of the music.

“It is arguable that, without Malcolm, there would now be no Bingley Jazz Club. He kept the flame burning in Bingley for many years, through fat years and lean.”

Bingley Jazz Club meets every Thursday at 8pm at the York Street Sports and Social Club. Visit facebook.com/bingleyjazzclub for further information.
