KEIGHLEY singers will be among 800 Rock Choir members performing in York on Saturday, July 23.

They are coming together from several Rock Choir groups across the Yorkshire region to perform a summer show spectacular at the city’s Barbican.

Members from Keighley, York, Harrogate and Doncaster will present a selection of upbeat, feelgood songs from the Rock Choir repertoire.

These will include unique arrangements of hits such as Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now, Jess Glynne’s Hold My Hand, and Erasure’s A Little Respect.

The show by the largest contemporary choir organisation in the UK will be performed in support of the charity Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Rock Choir leader Narelle Brooksbank said: “We’re excited for the opportunity to combine the whole of Rock Choir Yorkshire to showcase their talent as one huge choir made up of almost 800 members at the York Barbican.

“This is the first time I have conducted such a large number of singers on a stage all at once and the sound created by voices of this volume is going to be a real spine-tingling moment!”

Rock Choir has more than 23,000 members in over 320 local communities across the UK.

Narelle said: “Rock Choir members get together each week to attend fun, friendly rehearsals where they are taught specially-arranged pop, rock and chart songs.

“There are lots of exciting performances throughout the year and many of them help raise money for charity.”

Rock Choir was started in Surrey in 2005 by musician and singer Caroline Redman Lusher, pioneering the contemporary choir movement in the UK.

Rock Choir claims to have been the first choir to offer the general public the chance to sing pop, rock and chart songs with no entry audition and no requirements to read music or have any previous singing experience.

The group has released two Top 20 albums, Rock Choir Vol 1 and Rock Choir Deluxe, and achieved Guinness World Records such as ‘largest musical act to release an album’ and ‘largest song and dance routine held at multiple venues'.

Rock Choir was the subject of a three-ITV1 documentary entitled The Choir That Rocks.

The choir recently won the Sun Mark Big Heart award at the Red Ribbon Awards, for its volunteer and fundraising efforts, and in 2012 Caroline Redman Lusher was given a Gold Badge Award by the British Association of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.
