LOCAL children are being invited to wax lyrical at Keighley and Silsden libraries during this year's Rhyme Challenge.

The annual competition runs across the district’s libraries until March as well as in toddler groups, pre-schools, nurseries and children’s centres.

Parents and children have to learn five rhymes together to receive a certificate from Bookstart Bear, the National Bookstart scheme mascot.

This year there is also a prize draw for families to enter and win Gruffalo Story Sacks and Musical Instruments sets.

There are sessions at Keighley Library, on North Street, on Saturdays February 25 and March 4, 11 and 18, all at 11am.

Sessions at Silsden Library, in Silsden Town Hall, will be at 10.30am on Tuesdays, February 28, and March 7, 14 and 21.

Bingley Library hosts the sessions at 10.30am on Tuesdays, January 24 and 31 and February 7 and 14.

One of the Rhyme Challenge sessions at each venue will be taken by Jo Jingles or Tiny Signers, for a fun energetic singing session with lots of interaction and puppets.

Staff working with the children will also be in with a chance to win one of the Bradford Libraries Rhyme Challenge Awards.

Last year awards were given for best practice in libraries, toddler groups, children’s centres and nurseries, along with a special individual award.

Cllr Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Sport and Culture, said: “The Rhyme Challenge is a great way to introduce young children to words and books, as it brings in an element of fun. I hope lots of families get involved in these sessions.”

Parents wanting to take part in the challenge should contact the Bradford Libraries Early Years Development Officer on 01274 433684 to find out how to get involved.
