LADIES In Lavender is the title of the latest stage production from Keighley Playhouse.

The drama by Shaun McKenna is set in a peaceful village in a world on the brink of war when a young stranger arrives from nowhere.

The man’s arrival awakens emotions, arouses suspicions and changes the lives of those who meet him.

In the production, staged from Monday to Saturday, April 24 to 29, the man’s arrival also leads to a journey of discovery.

But as the characters in director Mike Boothroyd’s production discover, there are some things that should never be trusted.

The cast includes Debbie Park, Chris Avery, June Driver, David Brett, Deborah Mouat and Lynne Howell.

The Keighley Playhouse’s forthcoming drama, Ladies In Lavender, tells the story of two sisters whose quiet lives of cocoa before bedtime and unravelling balls of wool is transformed by the discovery of an unconscious young man washed up on the coast.

They take him into their home and he steals the way into the lives and hearts of the women with conflicting anxiety and sympathy coupled with the English sense of hospitality at odds with the fears of impropriety and the unknown.

Mike Boothroyd set out to steer the gentle, conventional, well-crafted play and with the help of a talented cast to bring out all of the play’s delicate nuances.

He said: “Despite being adapted from a film, this play stands up simply as a credible piece of drama with an all-embracing, comprehensive plot line being peppered with moments of hilarity and warmth.

“Ladies In Lavender not only provides a telling portrait of a provincial world and a haven containing its own seeds of discontent, it’s also a tale about youth and ageing.

“The sisters’ circumstances provide an affecting emotional fulcrum of which the competitive spirit proves to be alive and thriving in the household with the sisters jealously guarding the stranger like some delivered prize.

“Meanwhile, with their idyllic surroundings about to be interrupted by the impending events of war in Europe, the sisters’ peaceful world is about to be disturbed in more ways than one.

“It becomes clear when the time comes for the man to leave and fulfil his destiny, he leaves behind at least one broken heart.”

Ladies In Lavender will be performed each evening at 1.30pm. Tickets cost £6 and £7. Call the box office on 07599 890769 to book tickets.
