KEIGHLEY band Single File are reforming for the first time in 25 years.

The trio were a popular attraction in Keighley pubs the 1980s but last played a quarter-of-a-century ago.

They bowed out at the popular town centre venue the Grinning Rat – on the corner of Church Street and North Street – in 1992.

The end came after 450 gigs, numerous tours, five albums and a charting single.

Roger Kirby, Mike Westhead and Martin Keighley got back together in January this year for rehearsals.

Roger said: “A tour is possibly on the cards, but for now the focus is on the first comeback gig at the Cock and Bottle in Skipton at 3pm on July 8.”

“We are expecting a bumper crowd with some fans known to be travelling from abroad. The band will play most of the old Single File favourites, including Severn Winds and Valentine’s Day, along with a selection of old and new covers.”

Admission to the gig will be free.

Single File practised above Dave Greenwood’s shop in South Street, which later became SAM Acoustics, a regular haunt for local musicians looking for equipment, advice or simply a chat with fellow musos.

In the intervening years, Roger has continued to play live almost every week, with bands including Talking To Myself, Blondel and, currently, the popular Keighley-based rock ‘n’ roll covers band Blue Suede Dudes.

He added: “I had forgotten how good the old Single File stuff was and am really looking forward to getting back to playing it live after so long.”

Martin Keighley has split his time during the past 25 years between his recording studio and the Cock and Bottle in Skipton.

Just like in his time with Single File, Martin remains a prolific songwriter, but music production has become his greatest passion.

He said: “Getting back to full rehearsals playing bass again was a bit of a shock to the system at first, but then it hits you just how much fun it is.”

Mike Westhead moved to Cheshire 25 years ago and has continued to write, tour and perform with many bands, both nationally and internationally.

He has also established a reputation as a solo artist and continues to be involved in the Northwest music and arts scene.

Mike said: “When Martin and Roger got in touch to suggest a bit of a get-together for Martin’s birthday we never expected it to go this far.”

The Cock and Bottle gig will be free entry. Contact Roger Kirby on 07939 997914 for further information.
