This paperback original is getting a big push from Random House as "the year's most exciting thriller debut".
But with a villain copying the styles of famous serial killers, a young female FBI haunted by her past and a retired profiler pulling strings, it doesn't seem particularly original.
The devil is definitely in the detail, however, whether the gritty settings, gory descriptions, intense plot or rounded characters.
It's a brutal cut above the average serial-killer thriller.
