CONTRARY to popular belief CAMRA does not just support pubs.

Clubs across the country show a great commitment to selling cask-conditioned beer and the campaign actively supports them and promotes an award scheme for those serving real ale in excellent condition.

Keighley and Craven branch members visit local clubs on a regular basis seeking out the very best beer quality. They are also looking for clubs that provide their community with a social hub, offer good customer service and have a great atmosphere.

The top clubs are then nominated in the Club of the Year competition. Following a round of surveying, voting takes place at the March branch meeting.

This year the Oakworth Social Club was named the overall winner.

Purpose built in 1899 as a members’ club, it was originally called the Liberal Club. The political association finished in 1933 and the name change followed, and today the club is still flourishing.

Built in the Victorians’ favourite Italianate style, the building is unlisted but still a key feature in the Oakworth Conservation Area.

Supported by over 1,000 members, the club is the centre of the local community, offering organised day trips and regular live music events. There are bingo nights, traditional games and live sporting events on TV.

The day-to-day running of the club is in the capable hands of Dale Walsh and Louise Shimmin. Along with their staff they provide friendly efficient service and create a pleasant atmosphere.

All are welcome and the clientele mix reflects that. The club has a comfortably furnished lounge, a public bar and an upstairs meeting come function room with an additional bar.

Local breweries are supported with Saltaire Blonde and Timothy Taylor Golden Best as regulars, and there’s an ever-changing guest ale. The club is open to non-members on payment of £1 entry fee. This fee is waived upon production of a valid CAMRA membership card.

The presentation for the 2017 Keighley and Craven ranch Club of the Year Award will take place at the Oakworth Social Club, Chapel Lane, Oakworth, BD22 7HY, on April 25 at 8.30pm.
