WHILST a lot of us will freely admit to overindulging during the holiday festivities, there are some things that you really should not go “cold turkey” on in the New Year.

#Tryanuary was created in 2015 to encourage beer fans to support independent breweries, pubs, bars and other retailers during what can be a challenging month for the industry, so we can all do our bit by paying visits to a local hostelry and using the hashtag to spread the word on Social Media.

To give you some fresh ideas this month we focus on a few of our newer venues which you may not yet have visited.

First is our new Pub of the Season – The Counting House on Kirkgate, Silsden. Converted from a closed bank in March 2016, it is a quirky café bar offering four constantly-changing real ales, often with a darker beer available.

They also have a small daily menu of fresh home-cooked food including Sunday lunch, and should the weather ever improve, have a lovely little suntrap of a beer garden at the back. See Facebook @thecountinghouse23.

Why not make an evening of it and come along to the Pub of the Season social and presentation which will be Wednesday January 31, starting at 8pm with a presentation at 8.30pm.

Second is the welcome refurbishment of the Great Northern, opposite the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway’s Ingrow station.

Sadly neglected and run down in recent years, and often closed, it has been given a new lease of life and a fresh coat of paint by local brewers Bridgehouse.

Mine hosts Carol and Daz offer four real ales from Bridgehouse and other local breweries, along with the usual wines, lagers and spirits.

There is a pool table, sky sports and pub games, as well as a comfortable lounge with a soon to be functional real fire (pending the chimney sweep attending!). See Facebook @greatnortherningrow for what’s on.

Thirdly, to end your month on a high, this Saturday, January, 27, the Wishbone Brewery in Chesham Street, off Dalton Lane, are opening their Brewery Tap from midday until 7pm for a special New Year, New Beer theme, showcasing six brand new beers.

Finally, please drop in and see us at one of our socials in February – for more details see our webpage keighleyandcraven.camra.org.uk/events.
