Playhouse season a record

Keighley Playhouse heads into its seventh decade with record attendances and confidence in the future.

The town's "Little Theatre" is proving so popular that bosses are again holding their ticket prices.

Some season ticket holders will be able to watch the next season's plays for less than £4 each.

The Playhouse, which is run by volunteers, is almost filling its Devonshire Street theatre for every performance.

The amateur actors present seven varied plays each year, each for six nights.

Joan Whitley, the chairman, said the current golden jubilee season have proved extremely popular.

She said: "Audience levels have been at their highest for a number of years.

"We are confident we have a clear feel for the kind of theatrical fare our audiences enjoy.

"We are sure our choices for 2008/2009 will help us continue in the same vein."

Mike Boothroyd, the treasurer, said ticket prices would be frozen for the fourth consecutive year.

He said the Playhouse had balanced its books again despite rising costs of performance royalties and utilities.

He said: "This means some season ticket holders can see productions at an average cost of less than £4."

The next season, beginning in September, features comedies, light plays and a period drama.

The season begins on September 1-6 with recent West End hit The Graduate which was also a 1970s movie with Dustin Hoffman.

Former stars stuck in a touring repertory company desperately try to impress a Hollywood producer in comedy Moon Over Buffalo, on October 13-18.

The Woman in White, on December 1-6, is a mysterious period drama based on the classic Wilkie Collins story.

Up and Coming is a contemporary farce by TV sitcom writer Eric Chappel, featuring a politician, scheming visitors and a passionate admirer, on January 19-24.

Neil Simon's light play the Gingerbread Lady, on March 9-14, has a recovering alcoholic battling to stay on the wagon.

On Golden Pond -- turned into an Oscar-winning film -- is a funny and touching look at family relations on April 27-May 2.

The season ends on June 8-13 next year with Willy Russell's Liverpool-set Blood Brothers which mixes comedy and tragedy.

The current season ends on June 9-14 this year with comedy Ladies Day.
