Cullingworth comedians pull the other one

By golly, there are lots of CADS in Cullingworth!

Those bounders are on the razzle three times a year as they bring fun and frivolity to the village.

You might well say "pull the other one" -- and you'd be right as their latest romp hits the stage.

The actors from CADS, Cullingworth's amateur theatre group, present their latest production from tonight until Saturday.

June Robinson, the director, said Pull the Other One was a farce with a very funny script.

She said: "It is full of misunderstandings, interesting characters and funny situations, and has amusing one-liners."

The play follows the misadventures of Albert Perkins who has a loving wife Muriel but a fearsome mother-in-law called Boadicea.

Albert's friend Hilary writes to him reminiscing about the good times they used to have.

Boadicea reads the letter and is determined to remove Muriel from the clutches of evil sex fiend Albert.

The mother-in-law appears to have the wrong end of the stick -- until Hilary turns up in a flashy dress with long blonde hair.

June said: "Albert has a hard time explaining the letter and ends up being hit over the head with a poker.

"There are further disasters in store including lost clothes, bellringing, and paintings which leave nothing to the imagination."

Pull the Other One is June's first production as director but she has appeared many times with CADS.

June's husband John plays the character Wilf Turner in the play.

In common with other amateur theatrical groups there are several family connections like this.

They include Barbara and Robert Thompson who, in Pull The Other One, perform and stage-manage respectively.

Then there is the Richmonds whose connection with CADS goes back many years. One of their extended family, Kimberley Walsh, performed in CADS pantos long before achieving fame with pop group Girls Aloud.

The spring play is just one of the group's annual productions, along with an autumn musical show and winter pantomime.

June said CADS - Cullingworth Amateur Dramatic Society -- currently putting on three productions per year.

She added: "The society recently managed to rent new storage facilities for its many costumes.

"New members to the society are always welcome."

Coming up on October 9-11 will be a musical then next February the family pantomime Cinderella.

The cast of Pull The Other One includes Karen Parkes, Tony Ackroyd, Leonie Padgett, Chris Narey and Frank Selby.

Performances are in Cullingworth Village Hall for the next three nights at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 (£4.50 concessions) from Cullingworth Pharmacy.
