Rumpelstiltskin is coming to Skipton’s Mart Theatre over the Easter weekend.

The show is being staged by the Bad Wolf Theatre Company which, with its partner Angel Performance Arts, runs drama classes and workshops in North and West Yorkshire.

South Craven youngsters attend the workshops in Skipton, and Angel held lessons for a time in Oakworth.

The latest Bad Wolf production features four locally-based actors – Vickie Wooller, Andy Lynan, Steve Waddicor and Simon Hudson – who come together to create a retelling of the classic fairytale.

The story focuses on a poor miller’s daughter, who is thought to be able to spin straw into gold and is held captive until she has created enough gold to feed the entire kingdom. But to do this she needs to make a deal with a strange goblin creature whose deals never end well.

The performance includes songs, dance and some audience participation, as well as jokes and a bit of cheekiness to help the story along.

Andy is enjoying being a villain again after playing the title role in the pantomime Puss in Boots last Christmas.

He said: “It’s so much more fun, and playing Rumpel allows me to go really over the top. He’s slimy and cunning.”

Vickie started stage school when she was three years old. During the past ten years, she has always played villainous roles and is looking forward to showing a different side in this performance.

She said: “Jane is not just the normal damsel in distress. As the story progresses we see her get stronger and deal with her problems.”

Rumpelstiltskin is performed tomorrow and Saturday, with curtains up at 1pm and 4pm. Tickets cost £8 for adults, £6 for children or £24 for a family of four.
