Leading folk band Bellowhead is heading into Yorkshire this month to headline Harrogate International Festival.

Keighley-based folk magazine Tykes’ News secured an exclusive interview with the band’s cellist and fiddle player Rachael McShane.

Ann Chadwick spoke to Rachael, the only female in the 11-strong band, about her career with Bellowhead.

Rachael said the Harrogate performance was likely to feature new songs from Bellowhead’s upcoming album Revival.

The band have been voted best Live Group at the BBC Folk Awards a record five times, and this year Faber Music produced a songbook to celebrate Bellowhead’s 10th anniversary.

The interview with Rachael is one of the lead features in the summer edition of Tykes’ News, amongst 56 pages of news, reviews and listings from the Yorkshire folk circuit.

As usual Tykes’ News features a comprehensive list of all clubs meeting across the region, along with details of the dozens of artists performing there through the summer.

Pete Morton outlines his new song form, ‘frapping’, which he says involves singing a traditional chorus between ranting lyrics.

Leading musician Pete Seeger talks about his classic 1963 album We Shall Overcome.

There are articles about plagiarism, and whether village hall folk concerts affect audiences at regular folk clubs.

There are previews of Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Cleckheaton Folk Festival and Bedale Acoustic Music Fest.

Tykes’ reviewers cast their eyes over gigs by the Long Hill Ramblers, Pete Coe and Alice Jones, and albums by Sarah Morgan, Mattie Murphy and Keystone Acoustic, Tykes’ News costs £2 from folk clubs or by calling 01535 606939 or emailing editor@ty kesnews.org.uk
