LOCAL scooter club the Cheeky Northern Monkeys have donated a trophy for the best machine at Silsden’s Summer Jam.

The music festival is over the August Bank holiday weekend on Riverside Fields, Silsden, and the Sunday will be mod themed.

Mod band The Jam’s former bassist Bruce Foxton is the headliner with his aptly-named band From the Jam.

In keeping with the theme, attractions from August 22-24 will include a Show and Shine scooter display, with enthusiasts from across the UK exhibiting their pride and joy machines.

Many will be highly decorated scooters or lovingly preserved vintage models.

Cheeky Northern Monkeys – one of hundreds of scooter clubs across the UK - have been together for around 14 years, enjoying rides and other scooter-related events.

They meet on Thursdays at the Emmott Arms, in Laneshawbridge, and have members from Keighley, Silsden, Cross Hills, Skipton, Colne and Barnoldswick.

Members are planning to show off their scooters in the Show and Shine.

The club’s ‘Number 1’ or leader, Ian ‘Stubby’ Stubbington, who lives in Silsden, attended Holy Family School, Keighley, with one of the Summer Jam organisers, Andy Conway.

Ian said: “There’s already a great buzz going on about the Summer Jam festival round here – and we wanted to add a little more spice by sparking off a competition for the best machine, so we decided to donate a trophy for the Show and Shine.”

Scooters will be displayed in a secure compound so their owners can enjoy all the music and festival activities.

Anyone taking a scooter for the Show and Shine will be given free camping on the Sunday night and group bookings are available for Scooter Clubs.

In keeping with the theme, the Sunday line-up also features mod, ska, sixties and northern soul acts including last year’s Silsdenbury headliners, Ska Face.

There will also be The Shade, Northern Sugar and the Big Bang, and dancing to DJ Dave Longy alias The Spectrum of Soul.

The festival supports Teenage Cancer Trust – a charity which is close to the hearts of people in the mod scene with The Who’s Roger Daltrey as patron and music ambassadors like Paul Weller and the Gallagher brothers.

Saturday aims to be ‘fashionably retro’ headlined by Sheffield indie band Reverend and the Makers, while former Inspiral Carpets frontman Tom Hingley headlines on Friday night.
