TWO MEMBERS of Bradford Catholic Players headed for Southport to promote their production of the musical Carousel.

Eliza Carroll and Ted Oxley danced their solo ballet – as young characters Louise Bigelow and Carnival Boy – on the beach.

They were recreating the evocative scene from the show where fairground barker Billy Bigelow emotionally watches the teenage daughter he has never met.

The famous musical shows how Billy tries to give up his womanising ways after meeting sweet factory girl Julie Jordan.

The path of true love is rocky for the newly-married couple, and Billy is desperate to make some money after hearing that Julie is pregnant.

Billy falls in with criminal Jigger and is killed while carrying out a robbery – but an angel allows him to return to Earth for one day to see how his child turned out.

Silsden actors Michael Riley and Anna Clarke play leading roles in the show, Enoch Snow and Julie Jordan respectively.

A spokesman for Bradford Catholic Players said tickets were selling fast for the “stunning” production at Bradford Alhambra.

She said: “Carousel is a story of love, loss and the possibility of redemption. The score is studded with classic numbers including If I Loved You, June is Bustin’ Out All Over, Soliloquy and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

"This will be the last time the Bradford Catholic Players will play at the Alhambra.

“Costs are in excess of £80,000, and with no council subsidies supporting amateur theatre the Players have had to reconsider their position.”

Carousel is running this week, until Saturday. Visit bradford-theatres.co.uk or call 01274 432000 to book tickets.
