Dirty Dancing – Leeds Grand

THE ICONIC film of the 1980s has come to the stage.

The show brings to life the story of Baby and shows how over the summer of 1963 she grew from being an idealistic child to a woman, as she mixed with the lower-class dancers at Kellermans holiday camp.

Unfortunately the film has not transferred to the stage successfully, with a great deal of the passion of the film missing.

Although the producers have stayed faithful to the story and script of the film a lot of energy was lacking, and I was disappointed to find that the musical numbers were in the main played on record rather than sung live.

On the odd occasion that they were sung this was not by the main characters, falling to a few chorus members who did a commendable job of recreating the well-known songs.

Things did pick up pace and energy in the second half, but I was still left feeling that something was lacking.

A wonderful film, just a shame it hasn’t translated to the stage, on this occasion maybe Baby should have been put in the corner.
