TEXTILE artist Rowena Hewitt is exhibiting her work at the cafe gallery at Keighley’s Central Hall.

Contemporary artist Rowena, who specialises in felting and painted silk, is displaying several wall hangings at the Alice Street building.

Rowena studied textile design at Bradford College and applied design at Cumbria College of Art and Design.

She went on to pursue her interest in silk-painted designs, selling her work through art and craft outlets across the country, including London.

In time she became a full-time mother bringing up two sons, and went on to work in local primary schools for many years.

Rowena said: “After my children grew up I turned a new path in my life, and decided to pursue my passion for felt making.

“I enjoy the challenge of creating something unique and special.”

“My silk scarves are hand-painted in bright colours and often combine felt worked into them, which adds an interesting effect.”

Rowena’s felt collection includes unique bags, nuno scarves, cobweb scarves, hats and broaches.

She sells her work in local shops and has exhibited wall hangings and silk paintings in venues around Yorkshire.

She also runs workshops in schools and enjoys getting involved with local communities.

Rowena said: “For my wall hangings, I try to use the wool as I would use paints, building up layers which result in rich colours and textures. I love colour and texture.”

Rowena said her favourite contemporary artist was Andrea Hunter for her “dramatic moorland and shaggy sheep”.

Rowena added: “My creative spirit is inspired by the rugged landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, near where l live, and my travels.

“l love the romance of the sea and the influences of the elements.”

Rowena said she was happy to take commissions of any size, and would also run workshops in schools, businesses and homes.
