STEETON Male Voice Choir’s musical director won a competition to grow the best beard for Movember.

Alan Clark’s ‘tache was voted the best out of 13 grown by members throughout last month.

The sponsored event, part of the national Movember campaign for cancer charities, raised £500.

The winner was chosen during a joint concert in Sandbeds involving Steeton Male Voice Choir and the Bingley ladies choir Opus 44.

Steeton spokesman Eric Parker said the Sunday afternoon performance at Pennington’s Octagon Live saw choir members at the top of their game.

He said: “A request to make this an annual event has already been made.

“The audience was enthralled by the quality and richness of both choirs, and there was a wonderful finale with both choirs singing two favourite carols with the descants sung by the ladies.”

Mr Parker said choir members took part in Movember to help raise awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues.

He said: “At the beginning of November evidence of unshaven top lips began to appear and a dozen or so men were spurred on by Ron Horne to grow a moustache.

“At the concert interval the men came forward to be judged to find the most elegant and groomed moustache, and was it a fix by the ladies to select Alan Clark as winner?

“His competitors also thought him a worthy winner of a new razor.”

Steeton Male Voice Choir will perform on Saturday (December 13) at 7.30pm in Bingley Parish Church.
