OPERA North’s hit production of the classic American musical Carousel is returning to Leeds.

The show is set in a tight-knit fishing community on the New England shoreline and revolves around the ill-fated affair between charismatic but troubled fairground barker Billy Bigelow and young mill-worker Julie Jordan.

When they fall in love, little do they realise that Billy’s rebellious ways will end in tragedy. Billy is given a chance to make good, but is it too little too late, or will a lucky star save him and those he loves?

Opera North’s fresh and vibrant production of Carousel received five-star reviews for its first performances in Leeds in 2012.

Director Jo Davies was said to bring the New England community to life with joyous choreography, a full orchestra and chorus, and a classically-trained cast.

The show was an instant hit with audiences and critics alike, praised by the Daily Telegraph as an exhilarating show that did great honour to a rich piece of musical theatre.

National newspapers also called the show a masterpiece, totally charming, and the best professional Carousel since the National Theatre’s revival of 20 years ago.

Carousel was composed by one of Broadway’s most successful partnerships, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, whose stage and screen legacy includes The Sound Of Music, Oklahoma! and The King And I.

Carousel returns to the Grand Theatre, Leeds, from May 13 to 23. Visit leedsgrandtheatre.com or call 0844 8482700 to book tickets.
