MUSIC In The Round is welcoming back the Elias Spring Quartet to complete their presentation of the complete Beethoven string quartets.

The quartet will return to the chamber music club, in Sheffield’s Upper Chapel, to perform Opus 135 on March 3.

Martin Saving, of the Elias String Quartet, said: “Our journey through the Beethoven String Quartets began in 2011, and has seen us perform his work all over the world.

“It feels both strange and exciting to have reached the final instalment.

“Regardless of whether Beethoven intended Opus135 to be his final statement or not, I find it hard to see it as anything other than profound.

“It gives an impression of being between this life and the next, and what better way to go than with a bang?”

At the heart of each of the Elias String Quartet’s Beethoven concerts has been one of the Razumovsky quartets.

Musicians of Beethoven’s day reacted angrily to these quartets, complaining that they “were not music” and that the scores were a waste of money.

The composer responded with the words: “They are not for you; they are for a later age.”

Music in the Round’s spring season also includes Exploring Haydn, a weekend festival of concerts, workshops and talks dedicated to the composer, a Pay What You Want concert, and the final installments of complete Beethoven piano sonatas and string quartet cycles by Ensemble 360 pianist Tim Horton.
