MAY ARCHER is an elderly widow who lives alone and receives very few calls at her house.

The only visitors she gets our persistent sales people who are always trying to persuade her to buy their goods or services.

In Keighley Playhouse this latest production senior heroine turns her ordeal to her advantage.

Streams of colourful characters arrive, all with the intention of convincing their prospective client to part with her money.

Mike Boothroyd, director of next week bosses play, said A Foot In The Door had all the hallmarks of madcap humour.

He said the audience would watch as the salesman battled and persisted took at what it takes to get a signature on the dotted line to secure a sale.

He said: "This identifiable comedy centres on an elderly widow who never seems to say no to a salesperson.

“However, when five of them turn up at the same time, each vying for her attention, things get a little hectic."

The play’s author Richard Harris - not to be confused with the actor with the same name - also wrote the highly successful comedy, Stepping Out.

He primarily wrote detective scripts for television such as A Touch of Frost, The Last Detective and Shoestring.

But he was a prolific writer and was equally at home writing comedy stage plays such as, Outside Edge, Party Piece and Who Goes Bare.

Mike said: "A Foot In The Door is set during the space of one day as May Archer ‘entertains’ Warren, Desmond, Jilly and Stan - plus his assistant.

“But her total lack of interest in any of their products looks set to spoil their hopes of achieving anything other than a cosy chat and a cup of tea."

Eventually, May comes up with a clever plan that satisfies everyone.

Mike added: "Even though the play takes a comical look at sales competitiveness, A Foot In The Door has a lot of substance. I think everyone in the audience will relate to May and her situation.”
