LOCAL ladies choir Opus 44 has won a top award at a second leading West Yorkshire music festival.

The Bingley-based choir, which has many members in the Keighley area, last month brought home silverware from the Mrs Sunderland Competition in Huddersfield.

They went on to win the ladies choir class at the Robertshaw festival in their hometown.

The wins in Huddersfield included the best song award for their rendition of Las Amarillas by the Canadian composer, Stephen Hatfield.

The same song drew particular praise the following Friday from the Robertshaw adjudicator, Lynne Rogers, who complimented their “enthralling” performance and grading them as 'outstanding'.

A choir spokesman said: “It was a busy week, but we were delighted with the result of our hard work.

“Lynne commented on how we appear to enjoy each other's company as we sing. Rehearsals are hard work but we have great fun.”

Choir members are looking forward to a singing workshop on May 10, which is open to non-members.

The choir’s musical director Alison Pryce-Jones promises to bring her enthusiasm and skill to any like-minded upper voice singer who wants to spend the day improving their singing and learning new songs.
