Jesus Christ Superstar – Leeds Grand

THIS FAST-paced rock musical tells the story of the last few days of Jesus's life leading to his crucifixion. It focuses on Judas' betrayal and the turmoil he goes through.

The show, the second hit to be written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, was first presented in 1971 and changed the face of theatrical musicals as well as courting controversy from religious groups.

It contains well-known songs are Everything’s Alright, Gethsemane, I Don’t Know How To Love Him and Superstar that in the original album featured stars like David Essex and.

The cast have excellent voices, all complementing each other, which is definitely needed for the continuous songs.

The juxtaposition of the rabble of disciples to the disciplined high priests works well and helps move the story along.

A wonderful performance by Herod lifted the second half before the rather more serious and poignant ending.

The show, which has a basic set with fantastic actors, is well worth tuning into.

Leeds Grand will host a diverse trio of musicals over the next few months: jukebox show Dreamboats And Miniskirts with early 1960s pop hits, Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The Sound Of Music, and Gary Barlow’s new musical The Girls, based on Calendar Girls.
