THE PIRATES Of Penzance weigh anchor in the Worth Valley this month for fun and frolics.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s famous comic opera will be presented by Haworth West Lane Baptist Amateur Operatic Society.

The show, one of the most popular G&S operettas, will be at West Lane Baptist Church, Haworth, from NOvember 16 to 21.

Performances will be at 7.30pm each evening, with a matinee on Saturday November 21 at 2.15pm.

Admission is £10 for adults and £5 for children, and on the Monday evening and Saturday matinee tickets for over 60s will cost.

The Pirates Of Penzance was the fifth Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration and introduced the much-parodied Major-General's Song.

The opera was performed for more than a century by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in Britain and many other opera companies and repertory companies worldwide.

Modernised productions include Joseph Papp's 1981 Broadway production, which ran for 787 performances, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival . It was subsequently filmed and has since been performed by many amateur theatrical societies.

The Pirates Of Penzance remains popular today, taking its place along with The Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore as one of the most frequently played Gilbert and Sullivan operas.
