GLUSBURN Institute bosses are appealing for public help to cover the £30,000 cost of much-needed refurbishments.

The volunteers have launched an online crowdfunding campaign to attract cash for improvements to the interior of the historic building.

A particular target is the main hall which is regularly used for theatre productions, dances and private functions.

The management committee also hope to improve the much-used bar area and kitchen as part of a building-wide refurbishment programme.

Also on the shopping list are new seats for the theatre balcony, bringing an old room back into use, improving disability access, and completing roof repairs.

The launch of the campaign comes as the institute, a community and arts centre, prepares for curtain-up on its popular annual pantomime, this year Alice In Wonderland.

Coming events include magic duo Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee (March 5), comedian Gareth Edwards (April 2), a murder mystery evening (June 11) and Eagles tribute band Desperado (October 29).

Jason Smith, one of the institute trustees, said that each year the committee set out a number of goals and projects.

He said: “We have identified a requirement to refurbish much of the inside of the building, especially the main hall theatre space.

“Over the last two years we have, with help of other organisations, upgraded many of the on stage and theatre systems including stage curtains, sound and lighting equipment.

“It is now time to focus our attention on the space itself and its fabrication.”

Mr Smith said the institute relied heavily on grant funding for capital projects such as improving the building’s facilities.

He said: “We continue to invest money straight back into the building, be it event ticket sales, group bookings and private party bookings.

“With all money being absorbed by the day to day running, we seek to find private sponsors and grant funding for large projects we aim to complete.”

Mr Smith this week sent an email to institute supporters seeking pledges and donations through a crowdfunding site.

The proposed improvements include complete redecoration and refurbishment of the theatre space including replacement of “tired and broken” balcony seating.

An unused room , which is currently in a poor state of repair will be transformed into useable space for local organisations.

Institute volunteers also want to complete repairs to the roof to stop continuous leaks in bad weather, and contribute to an ongoing fund to make more rooms accessible to elderly and disabled people.
